Students of Bath Theatre School were treated to a musical master class last Saturday when West End performer Jacques Miche came to visit. Jacques, who grew up in Bath, taught the children a dance routine and song from ‘Bugsy Malone’ which he recently starred in at the Lyric Hammersmith. Jacques also held a question and answer session for students to ask him about his performing career to date.
Jacques has had an extensive career since his first professional performance as a teenager when he took on the role of The Artful Dodger in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of ‘Oliver!’ and soon after as Chip in ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Recently he also played Mephisto in ‘Faust’ at The Watermill Theatre and Brett in the ‘13 The Musical’. Jacques will shortly be taking to the stage once again in London in the role of Turner in the play ‘Quaint Honour’.
Bath Theatre School’s Principal, Tom Bright, said “We are very pleased that Jacques was able to come and visit the students despite his busy rehearsal schedule. The children have really enjoyed learning pieces from ‘Bugsy Malone’ and it was inspirational for Jacques to share his experiences as a child and adult performer. Experiences like this help develop the wide range of life skills associated with performing and this is why we are thrilled to have recently started working in partnership with Beechen Cliff School to bring musical theatre teaching and the opportunity to perform in a professionally staged production as part of school life.”
Master classes are just one of the many opportunities available to Bath Theatre School students, which prides its self on offering the most comprehensive and unique Musical Theatre experience for children aged 7-18 in Bath and surrounding areas. They are particularly unique by offering all children the opportunity to take solo entry Trinity examinations in Musical Theatre as part of their standard teaching. These nationally recognised qualifications not only build a foundation for a career in the performing, but the syllabus is purposely designed to nurture and develop key life skills which are relevant to all children, in areas such as confidence, team work, communication, public speaking and co-ordination. Lessons are equally distributed between dancing, singing and acting so that children can learn all aspects of musical theatre to ensure they become all round performers.
Bath Theatre School will shortly be starting rehearsals for their professionally staged production of ‘CATS’. The production will give students the chance to wear costumes, use makeup and perform in a 400 seat theatre to family, friends and the general public. Plus there is still time to get involved with this great opportunity.
The School runs on Saturday mornings and afternoons from 9.30am until 12.30pm, then 1.30pm until 4.30pm at Beechen Cliff School in Bath. Any children that are interested in joining can enjoy a free 3 hour taster session to try it for themselves and meet their friendly team.
